3 Steps To Declutter Your Home

Published on March 10, 2021

Now that moving house is possible again, here at All About The Move we’re recommending a serious declutter to help streamline the process.  After months of lockdown inertia, this spring is a great time to move. With banks being able to offer 95% mortgages to first time buyers, this boost will have a knock-on impact throughout the entire housing market. We will show you 3 steps that will kickstart you into action and help you to prepare your home ready to sell. First some of our professional insights into the thinking behind these steps:

Why declutter before moving?

-Moving home is an opportunity to realise change and embrace a fresh start. Streamlining belongings means only taking with you those items that you love, need and use. That means letting go of belongings that you never use. This process is incredibly time consuming and can be emotionally draining.

-We all underestimate the time it takes to fully pack up a house. We start with great intentions to clear out and get rid of all our clutter. Promising ourselves, “never again shall we move with that box of VHS videos or school reports,” but as move date looms and we realise that there is still a mountain of packing to do, it all just gets thrown into boxes. To be dealt with later!!

-You are selling your home, but you are also selling a lifestyle to someone else. They have to imagine themselves living there. If your home is full of personal belongings and clutter it can make that vision difficult for anyone who is viewing your property. Free up the space and get a head start on your packing.

 3 Simple Steps:

Step 1: Start with the space that you dread most. The garage, the loft, the spare room that has become the dumping ground for all the things that you do not want to deal with or items that you rarely use. Take a decision on each item and put into clearly labelled boxes.

recycle – donate – repurpose – repair – keep and pack

This method will sort this space, pack up items that will not be used until you move and create a useful holding space for when you declutter and start to pack other rooms in your home. One well organised and packed garage/loft/spare room will not detract from the overall impression of your house.

Step 2: Pick a room – assess what you use frequently and need to keep readily available until you move. Depersonalise each room of photos, quirky objects and the majority of books – pack, label and move out to your holding space.

Step 3: Tackle your drawers, cupboards and storage spaces. Set yourself a goal of one a day or per week. Viewers love to look into all storage spaces, make sure you are happy for them to do so -not running out of the room screaming, ‘ do not open that cupboard!’. We promise that if you take these steps you will be well on the way to getting your home ready to sell.
