Frequently Asked Questions

Moving can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Here we answer the questions we hear most about decluttering, packing, move-day management, and settling into your new home — showing how we make the whole process calm, organised, and stress-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re just starting to think about a move or already planning the details, these answers will give you clarity on how move management works, what to expect, and how we make the process as calm, organised, and stress-free as possible.

If you don’t see your question here, we’re always happy to talk you through the specifics of your move — no question is too small.

What exactly does a move management company do?

A move management company plans and manages your entire move from the moment you decide to move through to being fully unpacked and settled in your new home.

This includes decluttering, packing, removals, storage, move-day management and a full unpack into cupboards and wardrobes. The difference is that nothing is left for you to coordinate or problem-solve on the day.

How is move management different from a removal company?

Removal companies move belongings from one property to another.
Move management covers everything around that move.

That means helping you decide what should move, what shouldn’t, coordinating timings around sales and purchases and managing every supplier involved so the move runs smoothly from start to finish.

When should I involve a move management company?

As early as possible. Ideally before your home goes on the market or as soon as you start thinking about moving.

Early involvement allows for calm, structured decluttering and realistic planning rather than rushed decisions close to moving day.

How long does a properly managed move take?

The physical move may take a day but a well-managed move usually takes weeks or months overall.

What takes time is decluttering, planning, coordinating sales and purchases and avoiding last-minute pressure. Our role is to manage that timeline so nothing feels overwhelming.

Should I declutter before packing or after I move?

Before.

Decluttering after a move usually means boxes sitting unopened for months. Decluttering beforehand reduces what you move, lowers costs and makes unpacking genuinely achievable.

How long does decluttering really take?

Longer than most people expect.

Many clients clear one room then realise there are several more and the move is approaching fast. That’s when everything ends up in boxes. We build realistic timelines and work alongside you to keep things manageable.

What happens to items we don’t take with us?

We manage this for you.

Depending on the items we can arrange charity donations, coordinate collections, advise on auction or resale or organise responsible clearance where needed.

Do you do the packing yourselves?

Yes. Packing is a core part of our service.

We pack carefully and methodically with the unpack in mind so everything arrives in the right room and can be properly organised at the other end.

Who is responsible for insurance during packing, transit and storage?

Insurance depends on who is packing, moving and storing your belongings.

Because we manage the entire process we ensure packing methods meet insurance requirements and that cover is clear and aligned throughout. We explain this clearly so there are no grey areas.

Can you manage storage as part of the move?

Yes. Many moves involve short or long-term storage.

We coordinate secure storage facilities, manage inventories and plan onward delivery so items come out of storage at the right time and in the right order.

What happens on moving day when you manage it?

We are on site managing the entire day.

That includes coordinating the removal team, overseeing loading and unloading, directing items into the correct rooms and dealing with any issues as they arise so you don’t have to.

Do you unpack everything on the same day?

Where planned, yes.

We unpack kitchens, make beds, organise wardrobes and set up key living spaces so your home is immediately liveable.

Do you help once we’re in the new house?

Absolutely.

We often help with final furniture layouts, removing packing materials, organising storage and dealing with snagging or finishing touches after the move.

Can you help prepare our home for sale before we move?

Yes. This is a key part of what we do.

We manage decluttering, light repairs, decorating, staging and coordination with estate agents and photographers so your home is presented at its best before going on the market.

Is move management worth it?

For clients juggling work, family, property chains or downsizing decisions, yes.

The biggest value is removing stress, saving time and avoiding the common mistakes that make moving far harder than it needs to be.

Where do you work?

We manage moves across Glasgow, Edinburgh and Ayrshire, as well as the wider Central Belt and beyond.

What happens if my sale is delayed or falls through?

This is more common than people expect and it’s something we plan for.

If a sale is delayed we adjust timelines, pause or slow down packing and, where needed, arrange short- or long-term storage so nothing feels rushed or forced. If a sale falls through entirely, we help you regroup, re-plan and decide next steps calmly rather than under pressure.

Our role is to absorb the disruption so you don’t have to start again from scratch.

How do you stage my property for sale?

We stage your home to show its best version, not to strip it of personality.

Our approach is to work primarily with what you already own, carefully editing, repositioning and decluttering to create space, flow and light. Where needed, we introduce a small number of key additional pieces, such as artwork, lighting or soft furnishings to elevate the overall look.

This creates a home that feels aspirational but still authentic, helping buyers emotionally connect while keeping costs sensible.

How much does an average client spend with you and what does that include?

Every move is different, so costs vary depending on property size, timeline and complexity.

Most clients invest in a package that covers decluttering support, packing, move-day management, unpacking and post-move organisation, with additional services such as staging or storage added as required.

We provide clear, tailored estimates upfront so you understand exactly what’s included and can make informed decisions at every stage.

Can I pack myself?

You can, but we generally don’t recommend it.

Professional packing isn’t just about speed, it’s about protection, efficiency and the ability to unpack properly at the other end. We pack methodically with a clear system so items arrive in the correct rooms, are insured correctly and can be unpacked into cupboards and wardrobes rather than left in boxes.

Clients who self-pack often underestimate the time and energy involved and end up exhausted before moving day even arrives.

Do you offer a move-only service?

Yes, where appropriate. Some clients come to us already decluttered and organised and simply want expert management of packing, removals and move day itself. In those cases we can provide a streamlined move-only service. That said, most clients find the greatest benefit comes from involving us earlier so the move is fully planned and feels calm rather than compressed.

People Also Ask

Understanding Move Management

Is move management the same as relocation services?

Not quite. Relocation services often focus on logistics after a move decision has been made. Move management supports the entire journey, including early decluttering, preparing a home for sale, packing, removals, storage, unpacking and settling in.

What does a fully managed house move include?

A fully managed move typically includes planning, decluttering support, professional packing, coordination of removals and storage, on-site move-day management and unpacking into cupboards and wardrobes so the home is ready to live in.

Do move managers replace removal companies?

No. Move managers work alongside removal companies. The difference is that the move manager plans, coordinates and oversees everything so the client does not have to manage multiple suppliers themselves.

Who coordinates everything during a managed move?

The move management company acts as the single point of contact, coordinating removals, storage, trades, timings and decisions throughout the process.

What’s the difference between partial and full move management?

Partial move management supports specific stages such as decluttering or packing. Full move management covers the entire process from early planning through to unpacking and settling in.

Timing & Stress

Why is moving house so stressful?

Moving combines major decisions, tight timelines, emotional attachments and logistics. Stress usually comes from trying to manage everything at once without a clear plan.

What part of moving causes the most problems?

Decluttering and last-minute packing cause the most issues. Underestimating how long these take often leads to rushed decisions and unfinished unpacking later.

How far in advance should I start decluttering before a move?

Ideally several weeks or months before moving, depending on the size of the home. Early decluttering reduces pressure and improves decision-making.

What happens if I run out of time before moving day?

Items often get boxed without sorting, which leads to storage issues and unopened boxes. Move management helps prevent this by planning realistic timelines.

Can someone manage my move if I’m working full time?

Yes. Many clients use move management specifically because they are working full time and cannot manage the complexity alongside their job.

Decluttering & Downsizing

Is it better to declutter before selling a house?

Yes. Decluttering improves presentation, makes homes feel larger and helps buyers visualise living there.

How do you decide what furniture to take when downsizing?

Decisions are based on the new space, layout and lifestyle rather than what has always been kept. Move managers help guide these choices calmly and practically.

Can someone help me declutter if I feel overwhelmed?

Yes. Decluttering support is about decision-making as much as physical sorting. Having structured help reduces overwhelm significantly.

What do people regret keeping when they move house?

Clients often regret moving items they no longer need or use, especially when they remain boxed after the move.

Why do people live with boxes for months after moving?

Because everything was packed quickly at the end without a plan for unpacking. Proper pre-move decluttering and organised packing prevent this.

Packing & Unpacking

Is it worth paying for professional packing?

For many people, yes. Professional packing saves time, reduces stress and ensures items are packed in a way that allows proper unpacking.

How long does professional packing usually take?

Packing typically takes one to several days depending on the size of the property and how much has been decluttered beforehand.

Do unpacking services really make a difference?

Yes. Unpacking services help people settle quickly and avoid living in chaos after moving.

What rooms should be unpacked first?

Kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms are prioritised so the home is functional immediately.

Can move managers unpack everything into cupboards and wardrobes?

Yes. Full unpacking includes placing items into cupboards, wardrobes and drawers rather than leaving boxes behind.

Insurance & Risk

What insurance do I need when moving house?

Insurance depends on who packs, moves and stores your belongings. This should be clarified before packing begins.

Is packing covered by removal insurance?

Usually only if packing meets the insurer’s standards. This is why professional packing is often recommended.

Who is liable if something is damaged during a move?

Liability depends on who packed and moved the item and what insurance arrangements are in place.

Does insurance change if items go into storage?

Yes. Storage insurance is separate and should be aligned with transit cover to avoid gaps.

Storage & Phased Moves

Should I put furniture into storage before moving?

Storage is helpful when moving dates don’t align or when renovating. It allows flexibility and reduces pressure.

How long can furniture stay in storage during a move?

Furniture can remain in storage short- or long-term depending on circumstances.

Can storage be used while renovating a new home?

Yes. This is very common and allows renovations to be completed without working around furniture.

How do you manage items coming out of storage in stages?

Inventories and delivery plans are created so items are released in the right order and at the right time.

Moving Day

What should I be doing on moving day?

Clients are usually best removed from logistics. When managed properly, moving day requires very little decision-making from the client.

Do I need to be present during the move?

Not always. Many clients choose not to be present while the move is managed on their behalf.

Who deals with problems if something goes wrong?

The move manager handles issues as they arise and coordinates solutions with suppliers.

How long does it take to feel settled after moving house?

This varies, but unpacking and organisation significantly shorten the adjustment period.

Preparing a Home for Sale

Is it better to move out before selling?

This depends on circumstances. Some people prefer to stay put, others benefit from moving out first, especially during renovations.

Does decluttering really help sell a house faster?

Yes. Decluttered homes photograph better and are easier for buyers to connect with.

Should I stage my home before selling?

Staging can improve presentation and buyer perception, particularly in competitive markets.

Can one company manage decluttering, staging and moving?

Yes. This creates continuity and avoids multiple handovers.

Cost & Value

Why is move management more expensive than removals?

Because it includes planning, coordination and hands-on support beyond transportation.

Is move management worth it for smaller homes?

Yes, especially when time pressure or complexity is involved.

Does move management save money in the long run?

It often reduces time off work, mistakes and unnecessary storage or repeat moves.

Can I choose only certain parts of a managed move?

Yes. Services can be tailored depending on needs.
