5 Myths I Believed About Moving When I First Started: Insights from Glasgow’s Leading Move Management Company

Kath Woods

Co-Founder

Here are 5 myths I believed about moving when I first started. “I thought moving was just about heavy lifting and loading a van. Turns out, it’s more like a mental workout with a side of chaos.” When Zoë and I first ventured into the world of move management in Glasgow, we believed some common myths that nearly tripped us up. Here are five we wish we’d known better:

1. “It’s cheaper to do it yourself”

Yes, it’s cheaper in terms of immediate spend but let’s be real, time off work, a surge in stress (that’s impossible to measure) and the utter chaos of doing it all yourself can make the cost much higher than you think. Sometimes paying for help actually saves you money in the long run by keeping your time, bank balance and energy intact. Think about it, taking time off work to deal with a DIY move? Not ideal. The cost of getting professionals in is often outweighed by the time saved and the reduced stress.

2. “All removal companies are the same”

Not true. The right team can turn what could be a stressful, chaotic experience into a smooth, organised transition. If you’ve ever had a team that barely fits into your hallway, you know exactly what we mean. A high quality move management company will offer more than just muscle, they’ll bring organisation, planning and attention to detail. Whether you’re moving to a flat in Glasgow’s West End or a family home in Bearsden, the right team can make all the difference.

3. “Packing is just throwing things in boxes”

If only. Packing requires strategy, care and yes, labelling both the top and side of boxes with the destination room and contents. The most important thing about labelling is that boxes get placed into the right rooms for unpacking and any that aren’t unpacked straight away are easy to locate. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck wondering for weeks which box has the kettle in it, or worse, staring at a stack of boxes that looks like a game of Jenga in your hallway. Packing isn’t just about throwing things in boxes, it’s about making sure your belongings are organised and easily accessible when you get to your new home.

4. “You can just wing it on moving day”

You really can’t. Moving day is all about preparation and planning. Without a solid plan in place, things can quickly spiral into chaos. Trust us, we’ve seen it happen and it’s not a pretty sight. Whether you’re moving in the heart of Glasgow or out to the quieter suburbs like Whitecraigs and Bearsden, the more organised you are beforehand, the smoother everything will go on the day itself. Proper planning is key to ensuring everything runs like clockwork.

5. “You don’t need to declutter before moving”

Moving is the perfect time to declutter but here’s the problem, don’t underestimate how long proper decluttering takes. Most people start out with brilliant intentions, tackling that first room like a pro, only to realise that there are another eight rooms to go and they’re moving in a week. Cue the “throw everything in boxes” mentality and then those boxes stay unpacked for months, never to see the light of day again. Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of things you don’t need, it’s about making your new home feel organised and fresh so you’re not left with boxes of unwanted items in your new living room.

These insights have definitely shaped our approach, making us much more empathetic and efficient in our services. We like to think we’ve saved just a few meltdowns and marriages along the way. Whether you’re moving in the bustling areas of Glasgow’s Southside, the family friendly suburbs of Giffnock, Whitecraigs or Bearsden, we’ve learned these lessons so you don’t have to. The next time you’re moving, remember, help is just a call away and we’ll make sure your experience is as smooth as possible.
